Chris Kemp, CEO, Nebula
At this special event, former NASA CTO, OpenStack co-founder and Nebula CEO Chris Kemp will speak to attedees about what the future holds for cloud computing.

Before the introduction of the Apple II in 1977, computing was a proposition only for those with the time and budget to build something incredible from a pool of poorly-standardized parts: hobbyists and large enterprises. Apple didn’t invent computing – but it made it easy and accessible to anybody who wanted, opening the door to the PC revolution.

Consider the parallels to the cloud computing market circa 2013: That same PC revolution is showing signs of stalling out, as the cloud makes new advances in mobility and browser-based computing possible. But the public cloud can be costly, and doesn’t always offer the performance, data locality, or certifications that the healthcare and biotechnology industries need. And the private cloud can address these problems, but implementation involves navigating a maze of vendors, APIs, and standards.

What the industry needs is an infrastructure that does for the cloud what the Apple II did for personal computing, where standard parts can be used all together and turned on with the flick of a switch. This concept – the Cloud Computer – won’t revolutionize the market – but it will bring it to the next stage of evolution.

In this talk, Nebula CEO Chris C. Kemp will describe the situations where the public cloud isn’t meeting the needs of the healthcare industry, why the shift towards big data and mobility mean that it’s time for enterprises to retake control of their IT infrastructure, and how the current approach to deploying private cloud has failed.

Streamline your Company in the Cloud!

Business managers and analysts are increasingly realizing the importance of having well-documented, optimized and smoothly implemented business processes. Choosing not to do so is a little bit like setting off in a car knowing where you want to go but not having a map or even better a portable navigation device that tells you the best way of getting there.

Now imagine that this navigation tool allows you to easily model the route you want. For each of the journeys you need. Makes these routes available to everyone who needs them. And ensures that everyone involved along the route automatically knows what their role is and what they have to do.

Before we take the analogy too far, what I want to say is that business process modeling is a valuable aspect of business infrastructure. It strengthens communication, efficiency, control, consistency and the alignment of operations with business strategy. Folio Cloud offers a flexible, high-performance solution for the modeling of business processes using a BPMN graphical editor and the direct execution of these processes using the integrated workflow engine. Find out how you can streamline your company with business process modeling in the cloud!

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s new Commercial Space Operations degree program, the first of its kind in the world, will sponsor Teachers in Space summer workshops for the next five years.

A project of the Space Frontier Foundation (SFF), Teachers in Space stimulates student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by giving teachers authentic astronaut training and real space science experiences combined with information and resources they can take back with them to their classrooms.

“This is an exciting and fitting linkup between Embry-Riddle and Teachers in Space” said Dr. Lance Erickson, coordinator of the university’s Commercial Space Operations program. “Our sponsorship will help students, teachers and organizers collaborate in bringing space education to every level, from K-12 to graduate programs.”

Embry-Riddle will host the Teachers in Space workshops at its Daytona Beach Campus during the five-year timespan, with this summer’s workshop already full. Activities for the participants will include high-altitude simulation training, spatial disorientation training and strategic access to the launch complexes at Cape Canaveral, Fla.

“Embry-Riddle graduates are already a major presence in the emergent private space industry and we’re proud to have their alma mater as a sponsor of our Teachers in Space project,” said Bob Werb, chairman of the board, Space Frontier Foundation. “We’ve been working with Embry-Riddle for several years and today we are taking a giant step forward in our growing partnership.”

Company Adds Troy Carter to Advisory Board, Opens Platform for Licensing Partners and Content Creators

Santa Clara, Calif. – June 4, 2013 – From the Augmented World Expo – DAQRI, the leader in 4D Augmented Reality technology, has announced a $15M private equity commitment led by Tarsadia Investments of Newport Beach, Calif. DAQRI has developed 4D technology to deliver enterprise Augmented Reality solutions to partners across a variety of industries. The funding will be used to boost DAQRI’s engineering and design resources as the company continues to develop its platform, and to increase its sales force and support its presence in North America and around the world. In addition, Troy Carter, founder, chairman and CEO of Atom Factory, has joined DAQRI’s advisory board.

“We’re at the forefront of a technology revolution that will change the way people see the world,” said Brian Mullins, founder and CEO, DAQRI. “As an industry we have just begun to scratch the surface of what Augmented Reality is capable of, and with Troy joining the advisory board, consumers will likely see more innovative marketing and entertainment-focused campaigns in the future.”

DAQRI already has worked with household names including Twentieth Century Fox, Matchbox Twenty and SONY to create promotional 4D experiences that have brought to life DVD covers, books, album covers, and more. DAQRI’s white-label technology has powered more than 1,000 4D experiences for some of the world’s most recognizable brands and through its partnership with Quad/Graphics’ Interactive Print Solutions division, DAQRI’s technology has been used to develop ground-breaking campaigns and applications for Smithsonian, LEGO, Maxim and many more. DAQRI also took the Cadillac ATS to the streets with interactive 3D chalk murals in a Webby Award-nominated worldwide campaign.

DAQRI’s core product is a platform that combines simple web publishing tools with end-user apps powered by advanced Augmented Reality technologies, allowing creatives to easily design, execute and publish 4D experiences. DAQRI aims to turn those tools in to the creative standard for the industry: The “Photoshop of augmented reality.”

DAQRI will also make its technology available for licensing by new partners, and plans to open its platform to content creators, allowing them to easily design, execute and publish augmented reality experiences like never before. DAQRI also will support Google Glass from day one with workflow and publishing tools that allow customers to get their content onto the exciting new platform.

“I knew when I first met the team behind DAQRI that its technology and vision was going to change everything,” said DAQRI advisor D.A. Wallach, Spotify artist-in-residence and lead singer of the band Chester French. “Augmented Reality as a communication medium is completely different than anything that’s come before. Every industry will be affected by this, and DAQRI will be there leading the way. I’m excited to see them get the right partner to take the company to a whole new level.”

For brands seeking to tell more interactive stories, 4D is the ultimate engagement tool, backed by robust analytics, but marketing is far from the only use case for the technology. With this funding, DAQRI will continue innovating substantive, useful applications of its platform in manufacturing, medicine and education to revolutionize the way people interact with information and technology across all industries.

Attendees of the Augmented World Expo can visit DAQRI in Booth #38 in Exhibit Hall A of the Santa Clara Convention Center.

About DAQRI

DAQRI is leading the 4D revolution, having developed the technology to deliver the most sophisticated enterprise augmented reality applications. The company has powered more than 1,000 augmented reality experiences for some of the most popular brands and publishers in the last year alone, and is trailblazing advancements in the fields of education, medical, brand communications, entertainment, and industrial manufacturing.
Wikitude Studio – easy Augmented Reality creation for everyone!

New SDK including all new image recognition and tracking engine

Santa Clara, Augmented Reality World Expo, June 4, 2013 – As the biggest augmented reality event of the year unfolds in the heart of Silicon Valley, Wikitude is announcing the launch of yet another major component of its growing augmented reality platform: The Wikitude Studio. The Wikitude Studio is the world’s easiest web based augmented reality tool, enabling users to create, publish and manage AR experiences. By simply logging on to Wikitude Studio at http://studio.wikitude.com users can let their creativity go wild and create amazing augmented reality apps including 3D content and animations, no programming skills needed! Make print media, billboards, brochures, packaging and even apparel come to life with the Wikitude Studio.

The simple drag-and-drop interface gives agencies, developers, and AR builders of all kinds the ability to augment and trigger text, images, social media content, audio, video, and 3D content within their projects. The benefit of managing AR projects via the cloud – anywhere, anytime – all within your favorite web browser is another key differentiator of Wikitude Studio. Wikitude Studio is a nimble platform that empowers marketers to react to campaign requirements on a dime and instantaneously push updated content to the desired app. The Wikitude Studio is the ideal tool to maintain an app over it’s entire lifespan, as content and augmentations are quickly and easily changed over time.

“We’ve collected a tremendous amount of input from developers, agencies and marketers over time to ensure that we’re delivering what the industry needs,” says Martin Lechner, CTO of Wikitude. “This first version of the Wikitude Studio is already more than just an AR creator, it’s an AR publisher and an AR content management system, all-in-one.”

Along with Studio, Wikitude is also launching complete updates of its Android and iOS SDK, integrating an all new and in-house developed image recognition and tracking engine. Optimized for quick response times, this on-device solution has the ability to easily handle more than 1,000 augmented images per app. Wikitude’s goal has long been to provide a complete and seamlessly integrated AR platform. The objective of combining all AR relevant technologies including “location based” AR, a 3D engine and now a powerful image recognition and tracking engine, has now come to fruition.

“We know all of these deeply integrated components inside and out and are now able to put one fully optimized package into the hands of our community and customers,” adds Martin Lechner. “The new SDK 2.1 is of course easily combined with Wikitude Studio.”

As Wikitude has been the longtime leader in geo-based augmented reality experiences, the seamless switching between geo-based and now also image recognition scenarios, opens up entirely new avenues for developers and brands to present exciting experiences to consumers.

With these major releases, Wikitude is poised to continue providing the best augmented reality platform and AR SDK solution for app developers, agencies, marketers as well as OEMs of smartphones, tablets and augmented reality eyewear manufacturers.

Wikitude Studio and the new SDK will be showcased at the Augmented World Expo in Santa Clara today and tomorrow. Those in attendance will have exclusive access to the Studio, with a public release slated for few days later. If you can’t wait to see what we’ve been up to – have a view of the Wikitude Studio in action via studio.wikitude.com.
